WHY/WHY NOT: Toronto native Melissa Bathory is conquering the Ontario music scene with her upbeat and honest singing and songwriting. Her new album, Hands, is a refreshing take on love and loss and everything in between.
The track "Perverted Truths" would make Alanis Morissette proud as Bathory sings about an ex-boyfriend doing her wrong. It’s catchy, but not in the annoying “I can’t get this song out of my head and it’s driving me crazy” kind of way. More in the singing it out loud on the bus and people are staring at you kind of way.
"Corvette", the fifth track on the album, has a kind of big band sound to it, which surprisingly works really well. Bathory has the kind of voice that can sing anything, but there’s no doubt that she sings her own folksy pop songs the best. The album may be a little rough around the edges, but it’s definitely worth listening to. It’s the kind of album you can listen to while sitting around the pool on a hot summer day or dancing around your living room with your friends. A good addition to any music lover's collection.
