SOUNDS LIKE: "That chick who is exactly like M.I.A., right?" "NO," says this editor!
WHY/WHY NOT: So, I'm the whitest guy ever. Really. That said, it may come as a surprise how much I adore this album. "For real?," I've been asked. "Yes," I've answered with a sneer, although I clearly can't relate to most of the themes. Good music is good music, and sometimes it really is that cut and dry.
Santogold is an Amazon of a presence on disc as she belts out such instant classics as "You'll Find a Way", "Creator" and "Say Aha". "My Superman" is a lighter song that is equally as fun as the rest and just as catchy. And although she is constantly compared to M.I.A., I don't feel they are similar at all. Sure they're both strong women, but M.I.A. relies more heavily on hip hip and electro, where Santogold is a lot more upbeat, urban and borderline poppy. So shut up with that comparison because I'm pretty sure Santogold could kick your ass.
If I had a complaint about the album, it would have to be its length. It's too damn short. How are my friends supposed to make fun of me when my white guy, non-dancing dance party ends way too early? In any case, Santogold's self-titled debut is going to keep you warm as we enter the cold season, so listen up and enjoy the ride!
