Hexes and Ohs @ The Horseshoe Tavern
By: Jennifer Kentfield
Sometimes you just need a good techno tune to finish off the night. Montreal's high school sweethearts Hexes and Ohs added some computer beats and keyboards to end the showcase at the Horseshoe Tavern on Saturday.
With a 1:15 am time slot, the crowd at the Horseshoe had gotten a tad smaller, but the hype only seemed to increase. The electro-pop duo of Edmund Lam and Heidi Donnelly are an explosive pairing, and ignited the stage with a drum set, a keyboard, guitars and a MacBook shared between them, proving you don't need a full band to rock the house, just a lot of talent. The well-rehearsed longtime couple seemed to find their groove behind all the gear, sharing singing duties while pulling doubles on the instruments - and making it seem easy.
The energy was channeled easily to the audience, making it impossible for anyone to stand still while these two were giving it their all on stage. Lam and Donnelly seem to be fluent in an impossible amount of instruments and interchange them so deftly you don't even notice they have at least 2-3 fewer ba nd members than an average indie band.
Ending the show with their biggest song "HHHighschool" around 2am, the crowd was still as fervent as at the start. Hexes and Ohs finished their CMW set with a bang, their sound and stage presence definitely larger than their geeky couple appearance may suggest.
