24 Hours With: The Sunparlour Players - After the show
By: Jason Sherritt
You see, since Penner comes from a Mennonite background and sells preserves at Sunparlour Players shows, he has agreed to create and can some mustard for us.
All eyes take in the preparations for the mustard-making while all mouths take in some Jack Daniel's. Some mustard seed, some this, some that, (can't be giving away the recipe of course) a little love, a bad joke and a lot of laughter, a little more whiskey and all of a sudden everyone's dipping into, tasting and eating the finest mustard. Forget French's. (It could've used some more heat, some spice, and some zest, but shhhhh - don't tell.)
While Penner is making the yummy yellow, Van Dine sets about addressing the starving thoughts on everyone's minds as to what to have with the mustard. Guided by your humble narrator, Dennis practices the ancient tradition of frybread - a symbol of unity and community and a staple food amongst most Native Americans.
Satisfaction.
Some bands do drugs. Some bands do groupies. And some bands please with all-natural, organic preserves. The Sunparlour Players reflect their choice in their music, their stage presence, their personalities and their way of life.
In the morning (or the late, late, late evening), the menu is organic whole wheat lactose-free homemade waffles with organic bananas and dark chocolate made by Shelter From The Storm owner/organic photographer extraordinaire, Trevor Weeks. Then it’s off to explore the property’s 77 acres of amazing country sights and sounds — including a small waterfall close by.
Tranquility with humility — so comfortable and near ideal that it’s a shame to have to leave. For now, the Players are off and back into the fray, but many have stopped by the Shelter, and often more than once. Two Hours Traffic, Shapes & Sizes, They Shoot Horses Don’t They? and The Acorn have all been there, just to name a few. So it's until the next time, lads and ladies, when some band of mad-for-it, travelling gypsies needs Shelter From The Storm. Until the next time.
