DD/MM/YYYY @ The Garrison

It's not like I'd never heard of DD/MM/YYYY before, they've been kicking around Toronto for some time now, and have had no shortage of Internet buzz around their albums. Still, despite short of checking out their videos I didn't know what these guys were about, and the band I saw in those videos bored me.
This early dismissal of the band I blame entirely on their recordings. Listening to DD/MM/YYYY in a non-live setting is like listening to baseball on the radio, to really get it you have to be able to see the interaction between members, the sweat dripping off of them as they wrench simultaneously beautiful, bizarre and painfully loud noises from their instruments. And it is very loud—if the band's Thursday night performance at the Garrison was any indication, DD/MM/YYYY are masters of using the harmonic noise textures in their music to fill the room. It's not just noise coming out of the speakers, but bouncing off the ceiling and walls in every direction, and inside your skull.
How this will translate to the outdoor accoustics of Yonge and Dundas Square when DD/MM/YYYY open for Iggy and The Stooges on Saturday remains to be seen, but one certainty is that as long as they bring it to that show like they did to this Garrison show you will be impressed.
