10) The Dears - Missiles
Judging from the incredibly depressing vibe of this album (and for The Dears, that's saying A LOT!), the break up of the core band must have been quite the trip. However, it gave us this gift of a record. Although off-putting at first, upon repeat listens the emotional depth of these songs shine through to amaze and stimulate more than any other Dears record. Just call it The Dears' Pinkerton.
9) Chad VanGaalen - Soft Airplane
Calgary's own basement master musician did it again with his third album, which wasn't easy considering his last was Polaris nominated. Although he didn't stray too far from what he's done before, this album sounds refined and confident. It's definitely one of the best singer-songwriter albums of the year and a perfect vision in Canadian music.
8) Los Campesinos - Hold on Now, Youngster...
Sugary sweet, with a catchy beat, this was the ultimate party album of 2008. Sunny songs with high energy make this record unforgettable and was always a good choice to listen to while pre-drinking or while already drunk. And as suggested earlier, I drank a lot this summer, so this album got a lot of play.
7) Jason Collett - Here's To Being Here
Being the first album from 2008 I truly loved, Jason Collett earns a special spot on this list. Although I've been a fan for years, this is the first time I really connected with his lyrics. They wrap around your brain and stick with you for months and months and have melodies you can't help but hum along to. I know when I think back to 2008, this will be an album that will instantly come to mind.
6) Plants and Animals - Parc Avenue
Solid songs. Solid band. Solid album. It's the kind of record that will stand the test of time. Everything down to its Sgt. Pepper-at-a-bush-party-like cover is just so satisfying.
5) Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
Many people I know will be surprised this isn't number one on my list, but it still scores pretty high. Jenny Lewis' voice and songwriting really strengthened with her second solo effort, and isn't even comparable to her first. This is the Jenny we all love, and I for one, would rather her sing like a contemporary woman than a '60s country artist. As much as I loved Rabbit Fur Coat, I would have hated for her to repeat it. Good call, Jenny. Good call.
4) Land of Talk - Some Are Lakes
I'm going to call it right now. Liz Powell is the next female voice of Canadian music. Now that Feist has moved along to the big leagues, there's room for Powell's gravely, yet pleasant pipes. I instantly forgave Land of Talk for the long wait between their amazing EP and this full length after the first listen. Deep, comfortable and relatable, best describe Some Are Lakes, an album I know I'll be revisiting a lot in 2009.
3) Portishead - Third
After waiting more than 10 years, I'm still astonished this album affected me as much as it did. It totally brought me back to the music I loved years before, yet still felt so current and relevant. I credit Beth Gibbons' haunting voice that still gets me every time - goosebumps and all.
2) She & Him - Volume One
Zooey Deschanel, stop wasting your time as an actress; MUSIC is where you belong. Probably 2008's most satisfying album for the drums of your ear and heart, Volume One blends the beauty of Deschanel's voice and writing with M. Ward's master musicianship. It set my heart aflutter all through the spring and I was so sure it would be the best album of the year until I heard...
1) The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement
When I wrote my review of this album I had trouble trying to come up with what to say. I don't know why, but I just couldn't explain how much I adore it. Everything is just so right. The songs, the writing, the arrangement, the tempo - everything! Then it dawned on me. This is the best album of the year and expressing my love is impossible and my words are meaningless. I instead must honour it with this declaration: The Age of the Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets is the best album of 2008.
