Personally speaking, it's hard for me to remember pop music before I heard The New Pornographers. And since you probably just called me crazy, I'll say this is because there has never been a band in Canada that has brought as much joy as The New Pornographers. On their first release, they are a band full of radiant smiles translating into each song with confidence and total immediacy.
Like today's Pornos, Neko Case's voice and the songwriting of Carl Newman and Dan Bejar are the heart of the band. When these three go back and forth with their voices and instruments, you just want to give them a standing ovation. What sets Mass Romanic apart from the other New Pornographers album is how much comradery is felt in each song; it's the only one in which you can't tell who wrote each track. Each song fits perfectly with the one before it like a chain. I'm going to say it right now: it's the best example of perfect power pop you will ever find.
