John Paul Jones is the coolest surviving member of Led Zeppelin. While his former bandmates have since made a lot of boring music for old people, JPJ is in a super-group with Josh Homme and Dave Grohl. That group is called Them Crooked Vultures and It should come as no surprise whatsoever that their self-titled debut is brilliant.

Seeing as Josh Homme is handling guitar and vocals, the differences between this and any Queens of The Stone Age album look superficial at first, but it seems that working with the kind of fantasy-football rhythm section that anyone else could only dream of—in a trio no less—has gotten Homme collaborating again and out of the funk that was Era Vulgaris.

With a streamlined sound and more songwriting talent than is necessary in one band, Queens of The.... erm, I mean Them Crooked Vultures, have given us what is possibly the most straight-up ass-kicking rock album of the year.
