Demon Days by Gorillaz | ||
Any well-read music lover knows about the curse known as the sophomore slump. Countless bands have played right into this stereotype, but Gorillaz not only side stepped this curse, they circumvented it. This may be because the band works like a revolving door with collaborators streaming in and out, leaving Blur frontman Damon Albarn as the sole steadfast member, or it may be because Demon Days is, put figuratively, an animated record. It's not a wholly original feat to mash up different styles of music, but Demon Days goes well beyond, mixing elements of britpop, hip hop and straight up pop. This is nothing less than fitting as Demon Days was produced by Danger Mouse, auteur of high profile mashup record the Grey Album. Demon Days even won a Grammy and it's easy to see why with booty shaking tracks like "Dare" and "White Light" as well asmore abstract creations like "Fire Coming Out of a Monkey's Head". "Feel Good Inc." is without a doubt the album's most recognizable track, taking the listener on an upbeat journey. Who among us can't help but love the way Gorillaz navigate? Hopefully they will be able to top themselves once again with their upcoming album Plastic Beach.
