It's funny to think, now three albums in, that many people dismissed Yeah Yeah Yeahs as trendsters when their first few EPs began to gain attention. It didn't help that the band themselves freely told interviewers that they came up with a name and look for the band way before they ever wrote any songs or even played together—the music was an afterthought. To find something out like this about a band who is yet to release an LP makes you doubt that they will be around very long, but to consider it now three wildly successful albums into their career just helps you to realize they were naturals from the start.
It's Blitz! continues the YYYs' trajectory from ultra-bratty art-damaged punk band to respectable mainstream act by transplanting the band's swagger into an electroclash setting. Emphasizing the more danceable elements of their previous music and adding a heavy dosage of synthesizers and syncopated rhythms, the band has come away with their most accessible release yet.
Accessible doesn't mean bad in this case—"Heads Will Roll" and "Zero" sound more at home on the radio than any previous YYYs singles, without losing the sass that made their music sound edgy from the start, and the mandatory slow-and-tender-Karen-O track "Runaway" is given the epic production that side of her songwriting deserves. With It's Blitz! Yeah Yeah Yeahs have proven themselves yet again to be adept at whatever sound they choose to work with, which is not bad for a bunch of posers.
