As a band, finding a way to grow and expand your horizons without losing your integrity is a fine line that most groups end up not being able to walk. Thankfully, Yeah Yeah Yeahs have created a path for others to follow with their third studio release It's Blitz!.
At first listen, there's nothing really remarkable about It's Blitz! except that it is very obviously a YYY's record. After multiple runs through, what sets this record apart is the construction and organization of it. With songs often taking the long way to reveal their vision, YYY's have replaced the unwritten blueprint of verse-chorus songwriting with intricate ins and outs that let us know this truly is a band that has become comfortable with themselves and the emotional path they have chosen to take.
Being able to have the now seemingly standard synth do things that sound more like rock, It's Blitz! gives the fans a different side of the band. "Zero" and "Heads Will Roll" could have one listener jumping up and down with overflowing intensity while another listener will be dancing up a storm.
Mix in the brilliantly vague and emotionally stirring "Skeletons" and "Hysteric" and YYY's give the 2000s one of the few albums to have childlike excitement and insecurity walk hand in hand.
