Those who've been following Dirty Projectors already knew Dave Longstreth was a genius—it was really just a matter of time before he made an album like this. Where does one even start? The sublimely merged afro-beat tendencies? The Radiohead-size pallet with free mixing of drum machines, strings, synths, intricate harmonies and whatever else you can think of? Longstreth's own wonky, tempo-fuck guitar playing? It took about six spins to sink in, but between "Cannibal Resource"'s meticulous merger of Zeppelin riff-rock and Magical Mystery Tour-Africalia, "Stillness Is The Move"'s futuristic existential R'n'B, and "Two Doves"'s austere beauty, I got the big picture. Bitte Orca is Longstreth's masterpiece, a brilliant culmination of all his ideas, music passions and consistently growing ambition and determination. Some of it's even kind of catchy.
