Day Two: Thursday, March 19, 2009

I used to live here (I'm the "hey-that-dude-doesn't-look-Japanese" guy in the band), but Austin has grown up in my absence and has apparently hardly missed me. Driving downtown to register the band is an epic battle with traffic and parking.

The Geeks from Japan are playing at a sports bar. At first I'm like, goddammit, the reason people think that all Japanese bands are wacky and zany (we are neither) is bands like this. The door guy has a one-liner about how this band is proving that Yoko Ono is the best Japan can produce, musician-wise. He doesn't mean it as a compliment to Yoko Ono. The third time he says it, I bust out with a big Texas horselaugh, without considering that he is rather larger and more sober than me.

The Geeks, after some equipment trouble (don't get me started), go on to totally win over the crowd. They are indeed zany and wacky, but they're also kick ass and completely give themselves over to entertaining the people. At the end of their set, the band is leaning out the windows making rock star gestures to a substantial crowd gathered below.
