I don't consider myself a huge fan of rap or hip-hip. I won't rush out to get the latest Akon CD. I do consider myself a fan of music, however, and what Wyclef Jean pulled off last night at Metropolis was musical genius.
The curtain began to rise and there on stage, sitting at his piano in a red leather jacket, circa Michael Jackson's Thriller, and a Carnival mask, was Wyclef Jean. At that exact moment, little did the crowd know that a three-hour beach party was about to begin. Wyclef took an unexpected road to start the show, playing a somewhat laidback song, almost as if he wanted to give the crowd a few more minutes to prepare for what was to come.
Wyclef took the crowd on a journey through his musical history, playing everything from the Fugees, his collaborations and his original work. He also put on display his amazing abilities on guitar, drums and piano. He told stories about his youth, his opinions on certain global issues and threw in the odd joke here and there.
He worked the crowd like few I've seen before. Wyclef pulled fans on stage to sing along, dance and even for a little competition. During Hips Don't Lie, his collaboration with Shakira, Wyclef brought around 15 girls on stage to have a Shakira dance-off. When he couldn't find anyone, he made his way through the crowd, even making it onto Metropolis' balcony where he stayed for about 20 minutes of the three-hour set.
The entire show was well thought out and calculated, each song being played at the exact moment Wyclef thought it would get the best reaction from the crowd. It truly was a Carnival atmosphere. Wyclef actually said it best: "It might be snowing outside, but it's definitely sunny in here!"
