Live: Julie Doiron
LA SALA ROSA- JANUARY 11 - by Jason Giammaria -

Over the last few years, some of the best concerts to make their way through Montreal have been played inside the walls of La Sala Rosa. This night was no different, as Julie Doiron brought her playful voice and brilliant lyrics to her adoring fans.

Accompanied only by drummer Dick Morello (Shotgun & Jaybird), Doiron quickly let the crowd inside her powerful, heartbreaking lyrics as she meshed "The Wrong Guy" with "No More," two songs off her latest release, Woke Myself Up. The sincerity and conviction fans hear on the album was brought to the forefront of Doiron's performance as with each "softer" song, she closed her eyes and let the words trickle from her lips to the microphone, as if she had some terrible news to tell us.

As Doiron made her way through her catalogue of songs, it became quite visible that she was fighting her nerves just a little. She admitted to the roughly 250 onlookers she was not used to playing to such a large crowd. The result of this was Doiron going off on a tangent at times, telling stories of past performances or trying to decide what song to play next. Instead of ruining the flow of the concert, this only gave fans a chance to get to know Doiron and interact with her.

Once she and Morello had played all the songs they set out to play, Doiron had apparently not yet had enough. She switched to the drums as Morello took over on guitar and vocals, albeit somewhat reluctantly on his part. For someone who has only been playing drums for the last six months or so, she held her own.

The interaction between crowd and singer continued, as Doiron returned to her more familiar spot on stage, by asking the crowd how many more songs they wanted to hear. After an emotional rollercoaster that lasted close to an hour and a half, she thanked all those who had come out for their love and support. But after a night like this, it was the fans who should have thanked her.
