Live: Au Revoir Simone
LA TULIPE - JANUARY 17 - by Jason Giammaria -

It's a strange thing to look up at a stage and see nothing but lights and three keyboards lined up next to one another. So, as the three girls from Au Revoir Simone walked out onto the stage at La Tulipe, I couldn't help but wonder how each girl would sound different from the one standing next to her. I guess I haven't been around enough of today's keyboards, because they certainly showed the crowd what they can do.

It was made clear right from the start that the girls had a game plan for the show. Au Revoir Simone grabbed the crowd's emotional attention by starting off with their self-proclaimed sad songs; songs that made you want to curl up in front of a fireplace. The later stages of the show were dedicated to getting the crowd moving. The pace and intensity of each song grew faster and faster as the girls pushed those three keyboards to their limits. Did I mention reaching those limits looked effortless on their part?

Considering how simple the idea of a band of three keyboardists might seem, Au Revoir Simone's live performance gives fans an idea of just how much work goes into what they do. At times the girls moved back and forth between keyboards, reaching across one another to play an electronic drum or a small xylophone. It's a detailed art form, where if one were to miss their beat, the entire song would suffer because of it.

The three girls from Brooklyn have perfected their craft and people are starting to catch onto it thanks to their live show. It's evident they love what they do and they do it very, very well.
