Live: Royal Wood
GLADSTONE
HOTEL - JUNE 7

What else can you say about Royal Wood except that the man's bloody amazing? He hadn't been playing for more than five minutes before the woman next to me leaned over and remarked, "Aw I just wanna climb up into his lap." And it's true. With his Lennonesque vocals and warm, rolling melodies, Wood does tend to have that effect on people. As is customary at his Monday night Cameron House shows, he even managed to orchestrate a two-part harmony with most of the patrons of the Gladstone's near-full Ballroom. That takes more than charisma; that takes the skill to make music so good everyone wants to be a part of it. Happily for Toronto's music community, Royal Wood brings both. Primarily drawing from his latest release, A Good Enough Day, his 40-minute set of piano-driven roots pop came to an end too soon. He should have played "Acting Crazy" twice. I love that song.
