NXNE Live: Handsome Furs
COMFORT ZONE - JUNE 8

Comprised of spouses-to-be Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry, the Handsome Furs were top of the food chain on Friday night at the Pop Montreal showcase at the Comfort Zone. The dynamic duo — he on guitar and vocals and her on synth and drum machine — have been attracting much attention for their minimalist-ish gloomy glum-pop. Of course another reason that they've been followed by the indie spotlight is that Boeckner used to be in a once promising band almost no one remembers anymore called Wolf Parade.

Together with his fiancée though, Boeckner's found a new following. Wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with some very apropos Joy Division lyrics, Boeckner ripped into his guitar and his vocal cords with the intensity worthy of a '60s punk rocker, as his wife-to-be fiddled curiously with the various knobs on her modest console. The beats pulsed through the venue and a few people, including yours truly, could be seen rocking out to their streamlined, emotionally charged tracks.

Both Perry and Boeckner indulged in some stage banter, at one point having a nonchalant dialogue about the beer license with someone from the audience, before launching into another synth-animal of a track. It must be noted that Perry and Boeckner are polar opposites of each other on stage. While he looks as if he's being hit by a near lethal dose of electric voltage, she stands pretty, sometimes dancing ever so slightly to the beat, or sometimes pushing the hair sprouting out of her messy bun out of her face.

Despite their polarity, both seem to be doing something they share a deep passion for. Glaring at each other and giving a countdown to the start of a song, Boeckner and Perry definitely seem as in love with each other as they are with playing music, and that's a great and inspiring thing to witness, always.
