CMW Live:
6ixty8ights

LEE'S PALACE - MARCH 6 - by Chris Brisbane -

It was still close to a half hour before Toronto's 6ixty8ights would take to the stage, but the venue was already rammed and very hot, buzzing with fans anticipating a delightful, poppy treat, which is exactly what they would receive.

The 6ixty8ights soared through a set predominantly consisting of very up-tempo, catchy, repetitive and heavily Brit-pop-influenced music. The songs were filled with unrelenting pop hooks and zany keyboard fills, which, unfortunately, were muffled at times due to the dominance of guitars — or perhaps poor audio mixing. The highlights of their set included "And I Walk," and new material such as "Lion's Pride" and "Fever of the Times." 6ixty8ights' were led by bassist and lead vocalist Carlin Nicholson, whose powerful voice carried the band throughout the show and could very well carry them onto bigger things.

If you've ever listened to a 6ixty8ights' record, you may have noticed a strong Wings influence to their sound, which is replaced by a strong dose of Pulp when you witness them live, along with a noticeable resonance of '80s pop. The unrelenting pop began to wear thin here and there, but nevertheless, the 6ixty8ights proved unequivocally that they are very good at what they do. A tight and well rehearsed five-piece band, the 6ixty8ights have the potential for great pop crossover and success.
