CMW Live:
Fuckin Badass Indians

OPERA HOUSE – MARCH 7 - by Robert Lake -

This is straight up 1992 gangster rap — if N.W.A. had grown up on some reservation in northern Ontario. The beats and flow were old school — and admittedly, a little outdated — but the vibe was party and fun and reckless and sweet. Maybe F.B.I. aren't the most talented MCs, but they put on a funny show and I would love to see them at a house party sometime.

Their lyrics caught onto everything from AK-47s and pussy, to saying "Fuck taxes" and the government, to bragging about doing 'shrooms on the way to the courthouse. One of the funniest tracks had a chorus rap that hit on drinking 'til you puke, smoking spliffs, doing more 'shrooms, and complaining about being stuck with one of the less desirable women at the party after putting off finding a chick until late in the night. In their words: "Oh no, 'gotta fuck a fat chick."

The sense of humour was definitely on point, but leaves me wondering about their sincerity towards some of the issues, and what life on the reservation really has been like for these guys and the people they know. Despite all the silliness, there seems to be a genuine core here that can best be seen in the giant Mohawk banner they had with them on stage or their genuine concern for life on the reservation — as reflected mostly in the one slightly deeper track. Or maybe it's that they like to go a little wild and crazy a whole lot of the fucking time. Whatever it is, I can't help but feel there's really something going on with these guys.

While the grooves may have been slightly tired from a 2008 perspective, the show was fun, silly as all hell and effectively reflective.
