CMW Live:
Sloan

SUPERMARKET - MARCH 6 - by Chester Morganfield -

With a rabble of various C and D-level Canadian celebrities on hand (various indie-rock types, the red-haired guy that hosts some sort of argumentative sports program, someone that may or may not have been featured in Kung Fu: The Legend Continues), Toronto hipster hangout Supermarket was packed and primed for a Sloan love fest.

Sloan took the stage and launched into "Stood Up," a song in the more recent 70s rock/ACDC style the band has favoured, with gusto. Patrick Pentland, sporting his new deranged-Marxist look, played with crunching enthusiasm, and even smiled a number of times during the performance. Chris Murphy, as always, never stopped.

There was no limit to the choices of songs to play, with many releases (and a new one on the way) under their collective belt within the Murder catalogue. Credit to the band for some interesting choices, a rousing "Suppose They Close the Door" being a standout, along with sing-along favourites like "Everything You've Done Wrong."

The usual dodgy harmonies one expects from live Sloan were present from time to time, but no one gave a damn. The band seemed to be having a such a good time on stage that one had no choice but to feel great as well—even we oldenheimers who find hot, overcrowded rooms an annoyance were swept up and singing along before the set was done (at which point we returned to bitching about hot, overcrowded rooms). A solid effort by great players of above average songs.
