Setting foot into the Kathedral for the first time, with its dungy appearance and mediocre sound is sure to put some bands to the test but that didn’t seem to stop Drowning Girl from electrifying their audience. Conveying with an intense pop-rock and heavy-like sound, the band noticeably showed off their influences of the Breeders, PJ Harvey and many other Brit-pop and rock bands. With Hill Kourkoutis and David Paoli fronting the stage, their unique styles of creative scheming introduces a fresh new concept that people shouldn’t tune out.

The first tune of the night, “Caught by the Rope,” produced the aperture of sound, with danceable jumpy bass riffs along with intense pop infected hooks. Shortly thereafter the band didn’t quite let go of your shirt collar, delivering memorable melodies such as “Dead or Alive,” “Granstone Suicide” and the infamous “Bang.” They closed up with a couple of gems and the semi-new track, “Homecoming,” which pleased fans with its brilliant build-up and inspiring lyrics. The highlight of the night for many people was the song “Rabbit Hole,” which in duration, transposes slyly in and out of Nirvana’s highly underrated song, “Aneurysm” that would have made Kurt proud. If you’re looking for that “quintessential” pop/rock band, Drowning Girl is at your service.
