CMW Live: The Breeders @ The Phoenix
THE PHOENIX CONCERT THEATRE - MARCH 8 - by Melissa Bessey -

Back on the scene, alternative chick rock icons The Breeders took the stage at The Phoenix for an extended set full of new material. Lead singer Kim Deal announced that this was their second show performing predominantly new songs, but it was hard to tell since both old and new sounded very much the same.

The best number of the night was neither a new or old Breeders song, but rather a raspy cover of The Beatles’ “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.” Another memorable song was Breeders classic “Cannonball,” which featured trippy and stunning visuals.

The audience, which seemed to consist mostly of long-time Breeders followers, loved the show, though it was hard to tell at times, as they were an unfriendly bunch. The show was good and loud and sounded pretty well balanced except for the lead vocals, which were extra muffled at times.

Nothing very memorable about this performance, and unfortunately for all those who did make it out in the storm, it would have been just as satisfying to listen to a Breeders album at home. If you already love this band then check out their new album, Mountain Battles, out in April.
