CMW Live:
The Sainte Catharines @ Bovine Sex Club

BOVINE SEX CLUB – MARCH 7 - by Michael Dach -

It's difficult writing about something you don't understand, but when you're a fan, comprehension comes with head-nodding approval. Montreal punkers, The Sainte Catherines, played a unified set during their CMW showcase set at the Bovine Sex Club, despite all the bass-rumbling confusion and overpowering screams. Unless you have the ability to filter out fuzzy, mish-mashed, slightly distorted arrangements, don't consider yourself at a disadvantage. I have the same problem.

Nevertheless, lead singer Hugo, 'The Big Cat,' started the night off by addressing the momentous landmark: the band playing their first showcase and the posse's show count reaching 595. Close contact added tension. I thought the purpose of a hardcore show entailed headbanging, moshing and flailing your arms about in an aggressive fashion. Confinement certainly holds wiling out in disregard.

Where restricted movement contained the audience, on stage energy rose with the outstretched arms of The Big Cat who orchestrates his entourage and the few listeners unaffected by the cramped, limiting club. If not for several factors impeding the full punk experience, I was actually impressed by what little content I could mouth out. Not to say every word spoken carried muffled overtones; however, the majority of content didn't process quickly enough for me to catch.
