Welcome to The Top 20 Toronto Albums Ever
This summer, SoundProof has been asking Toronto-based
music writers, photographers, bloggers and musicians for
their picks of the Top 20 Toronto Albums Ever. The response
has been fantastic and we're finally ready to unveil the
list as voted on by not only the SoundProof
staff, but many of the fine folk at Torontoist,
Carl Wilson from Zoilus
and the Globe and Mail, Matthew Aaron Hart from the
Russian Futurists, Greg Ipp from Are
You Familiar? and Meghan Warby from 2nd
Floor Living Without a Yard.
Now, we're by no means going to suggest that this is in
any way an authoritative, complete or final list. We can
tell you right now that no single person submitted a list
that looked exactly like this one and we imagine you
wouldn't either. In fact, the most wonderful thing we've
learned from putting this list together is just how much
everyone disagrees on what the list should look like. Incredibly,
more than 150 different albums received at least one vote,
spanning years from as far back as 1955 to as recently as
earlier this summer, and representing almost every conceivable
genre of music: rock, pop, folk, jazz, hip hop, classical,
electronica even sound poetry and children's albums
came up a couple of times.
So for SoundProof's part, we'll be using the
list as a starting point for a whole lot of talking (and
arguing and shouting) about all the downright fantastic
albums Toronto artists have produced over the years
and are still producing today. Maybe you'll do the same.
So, without further delay, here's what's been going on in
bedrooms and basements, garages and recording studios, restaurants,
bars and clubs right outside your door:
