Quick & Dirty:
Jeffree Star
- by Melissa Bessey -

Jeffree Star is a hot young model cum electronic music sensation that dazzles fans with his beauty queen presence and adorably catchy lyrics. When I say adorable, don’t just think cute and silly – think sarcastic ironies about everything from sex and sexuality to cupcakes and makeup. Star’s career as a musician has not developed in a conventional manner; it happened by chance and thanks to the masses that flock to MySpace. Star sat down with SoundProof to discuss the evolution of a sassy makeup artist turned musical mastermind.

When you’re from the O.C. and can do makeup fit for the stars, you inevitably meet a lot of celebrities. And from a very young age, Star had an interest in makeup. Intrigued by his mother's vast collection, he would spend hours playing and experimenting with different applications. He became wildly fascinated and, before long, obsessed, with how many looks you can achieve through makeup artistry. His mother was a model; Star also felt inspired by pictures from her portfolio and has pursued modeling as well.

His run-ins with the stars began in 2003, when he faked his way into a popular club (under age at the time) where Kelly Osborne was performing by telling the bouncers that he was her makeup artist. As fate would have it, Osborne approached Star that night after noticing his makeup, telling him, "You should do my makeup". He immediately began working with her and for a time toured and lived with her as well, a union that opened many doors for Star (who had never even been on an airplane before). As their relationship continued, Star met and became friends with many musicians and spent a lot of time around music. He was not shy about fooling around in front of a microphone and people would often suggest that he pursue it.

One day, while hangin’ in the studio with Peaches and her band, Star began to sing /rap over a new beat by drummer Samantha Malone and it turned into a great duo. The track was so well-received that they decided to post it on MySpace and nearly two million hits later, it’s all history from there. Most recently. Star has collaborated with the band Metro Station on his latest single and has Electric Valentine’s lead singer, Lauren performing with him. If Star had to choose an ultimate artist or group to collaborate with it would without a doubt be the Spice Girls (a reason to re-reunite ladies? Think about it). Star is such a fan of theirs that he admits to attending eight of their recent world tour performances and likens it to a "religious experience". For an artist with such a diva-like and beauty queen public persona, you might think it reflected a true personality, but Star is down to earth. He explains quite frankly what happened during his last performance in Toronto. For those who don’t know, Star performed at last year’s Pride Parade and during the show had an obnoxious audience member throw a bottle of water at one of his band members. There have been tall tales about Star’s reaction and much speculation that he would not return to Toronto. On the contrary, he chalks it up to poor security on Pride’s part. There were thousands of people in the crowd and he did not take it to heart that he had to jump off-stage to “punch the bitch out”.

So what’s next for Jeffree Star who is, as he calls himself, “a fucking star.”? Now that he’s taking music seriously, he only does makeup requests for friends and the occasional celebrity or band. Instead, he's focusing his time on performing and writing new material, with a debut full-length on the way in September. Two of his most recent tunes to listen out for are “We Want Cunt” (which does not have many other lyrics than those in title, but is a very catchy, head-bopping tune) and “Heart Surgery Isn’t That Bad”. To describe his sound, think of a younger, possibly more fashionable Peaches mixed with a smidge of LCD Soundsystem and lyrics like you’ve never heard before.
