D Tour: A Tenacious Documentary

- by Jennifer Kentfield -

Because there just isn’t enough Jack Black in the world, Black and his band Tenacious D are giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at their world tour and the shenanigans that naturally ensue. Selling out a bunch of shows along the way, Black and pal Kyle Gass take their band from nothing to, well, nothing.

The camera is a little shaky at points, but it’s all part of the charm. It is Tenacious D after all.

The documentary starts with a fictionalized reenactment of Black and Gass playing a gig in a small bar. Black is belting out “Tribute” which is a tribute to what is obviously the greatest song in the world. Agent David Cross (Arrested Development) shows up, signs them and sends them off on a world tour; and there begins the journey of the greatest rock band in the world. Ten years later, they find themselves traveling on a tour bus playing sold-out stadiums. Of course their shows have a concept: Black and Gass die and go to Hell, which gives them an opportunity to use very colourful stage designs.

Between tour clips and random male nudity (not Jack Black, sadly), viewers get an insight into Black and Gass’ lives, which includes Black’s wife and adorable baby boy. There are celebrity cameos all around, from Dave Grohl to Jack White. After all, everyone loves Jack Black and Tenacious D. However, we may never find out why. "I think you guys have gotten to the point where you can do whatever you want," says Grohl to Black.

Along with following the tour, the documentary also takes us to the premiere of Tenacious D’s movie The Pick of Destiny and the bad reviews that came with it. For a band who knows they aren’t the best, they took it hard and it’s quite depressing to watch. The worst came when Tenacious D was scheduled to be on The Tonight Show, but they realize only Black was invited. Conflict and jealousy are definitely part of the show. Drama is always fun to watch!

In case some people don’t clue in, the documentary lets us know this is all a joke. The band is nothing more than two guys with inflated egos. I, for one, could have used more of Black’s inflated comedy. I expected a lot from him considering this was his time to shine.

There were, however, some good times with the band, and we did get to see Black in his boxer briefs. We actually get to see all sides of Black, including his delightful family man persona. Black and Gass know how to keep fans happy, and those who dig Tenacious D will enjoy this intimate backstage pass.
