CMW Live: Birds of Wales LEE'S PALACE- MAR. 10 Birds of Wales' lead singer and founder, Morgan Ross, and his fresh-scrubbed colleagues had an appreciative crowd enjoying their Canadian Music Week gig at Lee's on Saturday night. Their star is definitely on the rise; with gigs across Canada and Britain, and a reported appearance on the soundtrack of an upcoming film adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy, life is good for Birds of Wales. Ross led the crowd sartorially with some kind of subversive cowboy motif (boots for him), and there were more cowboy boots and hats in the crowd than most have ever seen in the T-dot. Blame it on Ross's laidback British Columbia style, which might also be to blame for this: "I say nice things about Toronto when I'm in Toronto." One of many offhand comments he made during the evening. Yet the bright lights of the big city have been kind. Fans were clearly enthralled by songs such as "The Fine Art of Ballet Dancing," a Barenaked Ladies-style number, as well as the breathy, uber-romantic vibe of "My Lady in July." The melodic pop of "Belgravia Hotel" was another standout. Sure, it sometimes felt a little like a night out in Pleasantville, but Birds of Wales' fans seemed very happy there.
