Live:
Cancer Bats
THE MOD CLUB - FEBRUARY 5
- by Shweta Rawat -
It's Nine o’clock on a Tuesday night, and one place where people weren’t sitting down to a quiet dinner was the Mod Club. There, it was a night of mayhem and musically inspired destruction as home-grown talent Cancer Bats took to the stage and unleashed chaos onto an adoring crowd with their style of punk-inspired death metal.
Cancer Bats are comprised of singer Liam Cormier, guitarist Scott Middleton, bassist Jaye Shwarzer and Mike Peters on drums. Together they created a musical frenzy hardly matched, even in the world of metal or rock. Middleton’s guitar matched Cormier's wails and screams chord-for-chord, though physically the lead singer is hard to keep up with, leaping all over the stage and feeding off the energy around him like a vampire who gets more powerful with chaos, a thought that leads one to wonder just how fitting their band’s name is.
The boys started off with tunes from their album Birthing the Giants, released in late 2006. Since then, there has been no looking back for the band. They love touring and have been spreading their frenzy and love for destruction all over North America. They are all great friends and this is evident in their chemistry together and with the audience. Cormier spoke out between songs and encouraged the crowd to join in, prompting a couple of people to leap up and stage dive, all of which was taken in stride by the Bats. They also introduced some songs from their upcoming album, Hail Destroyer, which received a more-than-enthusiastic response. Surrounded by loyal friends and fans raving about their performance, the show was everything a night of mayhem and dark energy should be.
