Live: Reverend Horton Heat
THE MOD CLUB – APRIL 29 - by Larissa Primeau -

You're never really sure what to expect when you enter the doors to a Reverend Horton Heat show. You can pretty much guarantee you'll be entertained, but whether it's by Jim "Reverend Horton Heat" Heath's outrageous Don Cherry-esque outfit, the well-lubed crowd or the amazing performance, is really up to you. If you happen to have a short attention span (I'll keep this concise for those of you who do) you'll have no trouble finding something to keep you occupied with RHH.

I have a strong personal belief that every professional musician, no matter how big or small, should include a cover song whenever they're playing live. Perhaps they knew I was there (doubtful) but RHH took this theory and certainly ran with it. They played a set of covers that Heath said they usually don't do. They may have been feeling nostalgic that night because they covered songs from the 1940's all the way to 2000. Each decade had a cover. The best was a unique and explosive version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and I never thought I would hear Nirvana's "In Bloom" done quite so Psychobilly. These guys are veterans, and you can certainly tell.

They knew what the crowd wanted and they gave it to them, even in the banter. When it came time to cover something from 2000, The Rev made sure to get a dig in. "Fuck Kelly Clarkson," was met with a roar of approval from one of the most loyal fan bases I've seen in a while. People LOVE Reverend Horton Heat. With two sold out shows and the merch flying off the tables, it's clear that Reverend Horton Heat's fans are not fickle. Jim Heath, Jimbo Wallace and Paul Simmons know how to put on a show. The only regret I had when leaving was not finding out where I could score boots like that. Jim Heath is single-handedly bringing back the flame-adorned clothing.
