Live:
British Sea Power
LEE’S PALACE – MAY 16
- by Justin Hines -
It was really hot and pretty late, but it was a lot of fun as British Sea Power hit the nature-inspired stage, branches and leaves and all, to play sold out crowd at Lee’s Palace.
Ripping through an hour and a half set backing their third release Do You Like Rock Music?, British Sea Power won over a usually lazy Toronto audience. Starting with "All In It", the band then tore into "Lights Out For Darker Skies" followed by the brilliant "Carrion" from the their 2003 debut album, Decline Of British Sea Power.
The band didn’t let up all night with Yen and Hamilton sharing vocal duties, Noble shredding on guitar and Wood pounding on the drums. The two musicians joining the band were a delight to watch: Phil Sumner was on keyboards, horn and even some guitar at the end, while Abi Fry played violin and keyboards. Of course, not everything was perfect, but off-key notes, feedback and everything else that goes wrong at a rock show only added to the authenticity.
There were many highlights, which included the latest album's first single "Waving Flags", the cornerstone to the new album "No Lucifer", "The Spirit Of St. Louis" and their biggest hit to date, "Remember Me". The band mostly pulled material from the new album, but everyone was OK with that, which is a testament to just how good this new album is.
There was no encore on this night but it didn't matter. The crowd left sweaty and more than satisfied. Oh, and to answer British Sea Power's question: I sure do.
